NGINX is a web server like Apache. What sets NGINX apart from its Apache counterpart is that it can be used as a reverse proxy, load balancer, mail proxy and HTTP cache.

NGINX is used in newer generation web projects because it is extremely lightweight (has a lower memory footprint) and can handle more concurrent requests that a similarly spec’d Apache server.

NGINX is used by services like CloudFlare to handle HTTP request caching at global scale due to it’s resilience and ability to handle huge amounts of traffic.
